Specialties: Restaurant Salaam offers fine world cuisine in an exotic yet family-friendly atmosphere in Athens, Ohio. Our eclectic menu includes traditional and traditionally-inspired dishes from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, North Africa, Thailand, India and Pakistan. Our dairy products, eggs, and much of our produce are locally raised; we bake our bread daily and prepare our salad dressings, falafel, yogurt, and most of our desserts in-house at our family-owned restaurant. There's something at Restaurant Salaam for every budget... from our Vegan Harira (a hearty lentil and vegetable stew, served with our house-made bread, a great healthy meal for 5 bucks) to Seared Duck Breast with Spicy Mango Chutney for a celebratory dinner. Some of our specials are "spicy hot" but many items on our menu ppeal to those who want more mildly-spiced dishes, or who just want to enjoy the excellent char-grilled steak cuts we feature in lamb and beef kabobs. Established in 2007. From our origins in a little "hidden gem" alley location to the large and beautiful space that is our current location, we've always been all about the total dining experience. Everywhere you look, there's something to delight the eye, and from the moment our hot house-made Turkish pide bread is put before you, you're in for a "big flavor" ride you won't get from a chain restaurant. Chef/co-owner Hilarie Burhans is a former culinary arts professor who grew up in Pakistan and Ethiopia and loves ethnic food of almost every variety. Husband Mark handles front-of-the-house and lends a hand in the kitchen as well, while son Ryland takes care of the baking. The Burhans family are lucky to have an amazing team of employees at the restaurant, which occasionally gives them time to play in the various bands and other musical endeavors they're involved in.
