About

Learn what awaited the great waves of immigrants after they completed their voyages to the United States. Some 15 million immigrants arrived in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These immigrants helped build modern industrial America and cities like Boston. This lecture by UMass-Boston Professor Vincent Cannato will examine the immigrants who came to America during this period. He will explore why they left their homelands, what their experiences were, the receptions they received in this country, and how American immigration laws evolved over this period. In conjunction with our Voyages of Hope: Immigrant Journeys to Boston, join us for a lecture on the immigrant experience after disembarking from steam ships. If you would like to attend this event virtually please email jaydie@thewestendmuseum.org for more information. This program was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
