Mauritanian French director Med Hondo’s WEST INDIES: THE FUGITIVE SLAVES OF LIBERTY proved a watershed event for African cinema—the continent’s first musical as well as a sui generis amalgam of historical epic, Broadway revue, Brechtian theater, and joyous agitprop.
