About the Play Omeed’s Tapestries– An Iranian shopkeeper and his partner plan to flee their homeland to live openly as a same-sex couple. When a devout neighbor discovers their secret, he threatens to ruin their lives. The shop keeper struggles to navigate the situation hoping to find a way out. The discussion will focus on the creation of the piece and its upcoming production. There will be six performances at ATA’s Sergent Theater between June 29 and July 12, with specific dates to be announced in April. About the Playwright Barry M. Putt, Jr. (playwright) Barry M. Putt, Jr. is an accomplished playwright and screenwriter whose work explores themes of identity, resilience, and human connection.Omeed’s Tapestrieswas inspired by over three dozen firsthand accounts, interviews, and extensive research into the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals facing persecution. Through this powerful story, Barry sheds light on the universal struggle for love and freedom, emphasizing the shared humanity that transcends cultural and societal divides. With a deep commitment to storytelling that challenges perceptions, Barry has written for stage, screen, and audio drama, crafting narratives that bring marginalized voices to the forefront. His work has been produced in the U.S. and internationally, earning recognition for its emotional depth and thought-provoking themes.Omeed’s Tapestriesstands as a testament to his believe that storytelling can foster empathy and inspire change in the increasingly divided world. About the Moderators Director Robert Liebowitz has directed over 100 productions since 1977, in all sorts of venues. This is his first endeavor with Barry, and he is honored to be leading the charge on Mr. Putt’s important new play. Cultural Consultant Asal Abasian (they/them) is an Iran-born, exiled writer, journalist, and queer feminist activist and researcher based in Paris. Their work moves between literature, journalism, and performance, tracing gender, exile, and resistance, and unfolds through collaborations with writers, artists, journalists, and activists worldwide. Asal defines their mission as amplifying unheard voices. About the event This Eventbrite ticket is your reservation for the event.
